AgilePM vs PRINCE2 Agile

At agileKRC, we often receive queries about whether to attend a PRINCE2 Agile course or an AgilePM course. To assist you in making a decision, we have compiled some helpful advice.

Keep reading to learn more or listen to the webinar where Keith Richards, the Lead Author of both PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM, discusses the two frameworks.

Agile Project Management Video

Watch this video as Keith Richards provides guidance on how to select the right agile project management methodology for your project. Keith discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and how to ensure the essential agile behaviours are taking place, regardless of the approach you are using.

The video covers topics such as:

  • integrating agile project management with Scrum and Kanban,
  • the role of a Project Board or Steering Committee when using agile,
  • the changes required in the Product Owner role when running a project, and more.
  • Keith also shares advice on how to prepare for and pass the exams for each methodology.

What is AgilePM?

AgilePM, or Agile Project Management, is a project management framework that was designed to manage agile projects. It was created by the Agile Business Consortium (formerly the DSDM Consortium) because many popular agile approaches like Scrum do not provide a project management capability.

AgilePM is supported by two qualifications that are managed by the accreditation body APMG International:

AgilePM examinations are managed by PeopleCert on behalf of AXELOS.

PRINCE2 Agile is not a standalone method, but it is used in conjunction with PRINCE2. This means that when using PRINCE2 Agile, you are using PRINCE2 that is configured and tailored for an agile context.

PRINCE2 Agile vs AgilePM differences

Although PRINCE2 Agile and AgilePM are different frameworks, they share similarities because they both aim to manage projects in today’s agile-driven world.

They both have a process/lifecycle, defined roles, products to deliver, and provide guidance on various tools and techniques. Both frameworks have a set of overarching values or principles that enable agile to work effectively.

Scrum and Kanban

So, where do Scrum and Kanban come into play? They both have a role to play, but they are not agile project management frameworks. This means that you cannot manage a project with Scrum or Kanban alone. However, you can integrate them into both AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile.

Choosing Between AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile

Both AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile have established themselves as credible frameworks for managing projects in today’s agile-focused world. They each offer unique benefits, and the choice between them depends on your specific needs.

Which is the best for individuals?

If you are an individual looking to enhance your professional profile or expand your skill set, we recommend the following:

  • If you have already obtained a PRINCE2 certification, go for PRINCE2 Agile as it will build on your existing knowledge and make your PRINCE2 qualification more versatile and relevant.
  • If you don’t have any PRINCE2 certifications, it’s best to choose AgilePM, as it is currently the most in-demand framework in the job market.

Which is best for organisations?

When selecting between AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile, it is important to carefully consider your organisation’s unique situation and objectives. Each framework has its own strengths, so the best choice will depend on your specific needs.

If your organization is already using PRINCE2 then adopting PRINCE2 Agile would be the best choice. However, if you have your own agile project management process, it is recommended that you consider both frameworks to see if either of them can offer you options to improve your best practices. If you are starting from scratch and looking to adopt an agile project management framework, AgilePM is slightly faster and cheaper, and it is a credible framework that has been around since the mid-1990s.

Nevertheless, you still have the option to go for PRINCE2 and PRINCE2 Agile, which is a more recognizable brand globally and has more comprehensive and up-to-date guidance on agile practices, such as Scrum, Kanban, and Lean Startup.

Other Agile Project Management Approaches

Apart from AgilePM and PRINCE2 Agile, there are several other Agile project management frameworks that you can consider.

One of the most popular project management approaches in North America is based upon the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
PMI also offers its own Agile certification called PMI-ACP, which is gaining popularity in the Agile community.

There are also other Agile project management frameworks that exist, but many of them do not have independently supervised accreditations.
